Wooden Fabric / Elisa Strozyk

I came across this artist - Elisa Strozyk- She does some great things with wood. I would love to see more on her process. I know right now geoshapes are really in- and its coming into art as well. 

This is from the artist site talking about her pieces -

""Wooden Textiles" convey a new tactile experience. We are used to experience wood as a hard material; we know the feeling of walking across wooden floors, to touch a wooden tabletop or to feel the bark of a tree. But we usually don't experience a wooden surface which can be manipulated by touch.
"Wooden Textiles" is a material that is half wood-half textile, between hard and soft, challenging what can be expected from a material or category. It looks and smells familiar but feels strange, as it is able to move and form in unexpected ways.

The processes to transform wood into a flexible wooden surface is its deconstruction into pieces, which are then attached to a textile base. Depending on the geometry and size of the tiles each design shows a different behavior regarding flexibility and mobility. There are various possible applications, for example as floorings, curtains, drapes, plaids, upholstery or parts of furniture.?

 
 
 I personally love the look of this stuff. Its very tactile and even thought it is wood it looks like it could be soft. If you get a chance, look her up - she does many other things as well. 
 
 

Vintage Book Week Posters

My sisters birthday was over the weekend. I had scored a vintage 60's book week poster. She really loved it. We started looking into others as well. So I am sharing with you my favorite book week / library fun here. I will try to get as much info on the ones that I share - if you happen to know anything about them - please feel free to share

These great vintage set of 4 Modernist posters were designed by Arlington Gregg circa 1936-40 as part of the WPA Illinois Art Project - Be Kind To Books. 

The set is filled with gems with slogans like ”What’s Your Future? Find it in Books!” (a layered statement, to be sure) and “An Elephant Never Forgets… But If You Do, Visit Your School Library!” and charming retro design, so obviously we’re all over it. I am not sure of the age of these but I would guess they are from the 50's 

 

 

This one is more like the one I found for my sister. Its about book week in the 60's 

 This image I just liked. Looks like it was a poster for the chicago library. This may have even been something from there information station - for new comers. 

An original Disney 1939 poster for Children’s Book Week brought a hammer price of $799.50 (including buyer’s premium) during National Book Auctions’ Jan. 29, 2012 sale.

Paul Rand book week posters - Thats all the info I could find on these. These were more like what I gave my sister. She ended up sending these to me in a e-mail asking if I find them to  buy them for her . From her gift I have had alot of  fun learning about these types of posters. Eiji Watanabe-“Butterfly’s Eye View”

How cool is this guy ? Not to mention really OCD ! I think a lot of drinking was the problem here. But really I love this - it pains me to think how much work this was but it ended up looking really fantastic ! These are all cut out from field guides by the way. I wonder if there are any left... people all over the world have a shortage of butterfly guides.

New Art Project

I've had this idea for an art project. Partly because I'm bored , partly because its fun. I'm going to start creating a daily food dairy. But , instead of writing it out , I'm going to draw it out , creating a pieace of art with each food that I eat. I've already started Friday ( I will only be doing it on week days ) and I will be posting them on this blog, partly because I don't have my own place yet to be cooking as much and partly because I want to keep this blog updated as much as I can. So readers , please comment and help with ideas of ways I should draw the set. I think for yesterdays , I'm going to do something more of a line art. Friday is more about the text and testing out the process. Each food will be labeled and drawn on a post it . I can also only use the pens / markers at my desk . Alright , I think that is it . Enjoy.
